Sept. 5 – Ending US-Sponsored Torture Forever: Successes and Challenges

Join us and our allies:

On Wednesday, September 5th, the Washington State Religious Campaign Against Torture (WSRCAT), University Temple United Methodist Church, and other anti-torture organizations will feature Rev. Richard Killmer, Executive Director of the National Religious Campaign Against Torture (NRCAT) and Dr. Rob Crawford, co-founder of WSRCAT.

THE EVENT:

“ENDING U.S.-SPONSORED TORTURE FOREVER: SUCCESSES AND CHALLENGES. WHAT ARE
THE NEXT STEPS?”

DATE AND TIME:
7:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 5, 2012

PLACE: University Temple United Methodist Church,
1415 Northeast 43rd Street, Seattle.
(next to the UW campus in the University District).
Fireplace Room in the basement.

DESCRIPTION

U.S. Government authorization and practice of torture in the post-9/11 era is now a well-known fact. Even though the Obama Admnistration has rejected that authorization, we are not out of the “dark side” yet. So-called “enhanced interrogation” continues to be defended and advocated by influential voices as a necessary technique of war. Those who
authorized and committed torture have not been held accountable. Nor has there been an official commission of inquiry. This event will offer two perspectives on what the public can expect the future to hold, the continuing challenges we face in the anti-torture movement, and how we might most effectively confront these challenges.

RECEPTION FOR REV. RICHARD KILLMER, with light food and non-alcoholic beverages, will be held at 5:45 just adjacent the Fireplace Room in the basement.

NRCAT has been at the forefront of opposition to torture since its founding in 2006. Shortly thereafter WSRCAT became the Washington State affiliate of the national organization. We are especially pleased to have Rev. Killmer join us for this program. From his position as the Executive Director of NRCAT, he has been intimately involved in the anti-torture
campaign on the national level and will speak about NRCAT’s initiatives in Washington, D.C. Rob Crawford’s years of leadership at WSRCAT and his teaching and research have shaped his perspective about the obstacles and
possibilities of anti-torture politics.

Discussion will include what we want to work on for the upcoming year, including information about AI’s new program structure. A few thoughts from Larry:

I invite ongoing reflection,on kinds of projects each of you/any of you might want to
develop and continue work on this upcoming season. AIUSA now uses a Program
Structure – Programs include – “America Program”; which is how detainee rights at Guantanamo   and Bgrm, CATreaty violations by the U.S.such as NDAA 2012,indefinate detentions, lack of fair trials, rendering of suspects, more;  Migrant rights issues and racialist profling can use our reponses, I feel.; Films and panel discussion at Ethnic Cultural Center/UW, cosponsored by UW Amnesty, is
a do able way to present each of these projects.
Other areas of work? Other human rights issues you want to discuss? Bring your thoughts and ideas!
*Update: We’ll also have updates from June & July events including the Tiananmen Square Memorial event, Fremont Fair tabling with the Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty, June 26th International Day in Support of Victims of Torture Vigil &  0p-ed. Also the July 17 lobby delegation to Jim McDermott’s office on the“Dream Act” and NDAA, and several U.S. violations of Convention against Torture.
*Future events planning will include:Venues for Writeathon; September to December Action, Event, human rights interests, more; Discussion on AIUSA pending changes and how people are experiencing these changes.

Hot weather getting to you? The Mosaic serves iced lattes & other beverages, and a pay what you think it’s worth, choose your own donation philosophy.

Please join us for a rally promoting human rights in China, held in conjunction with the 23rd anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre. The focus of the event will be to highlight how little has changed in China in the ensuing years, despite the economic progress and promises of reform touted by the Chinese government. It is time for China to fulfill it’s obligation to treat it’s citizens justly, humanely, and as people empowered to participate in bettering their own lives.
