No July monthly meeting at the Mosaic Coffeehouse (which is temporarily closed). Updates on events here and on our Facebook page as they come up.
Enjoy the sun!
Join us and allies on June 3 & 4 for two Tianamen Square memorial events at the University of Washington (details below). Because of the time conflict with the June 4 event (and also because the cafe is temporarily closed due to flooding), we will not be having our June monthly meeting at the Mosaic Coffee House.
On Monday June 3, 6 pm – 8 pm, Room 119, William H. Gates Hall, UW’s Center for Human Rights & Justice is marking the 24th Anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre with the showing of a documentary film followed by a moderated discussion of the day and why it is still relevant.
Then on Tuesday June 4, 6:30 pm at UW’s Thompson Hall, Room 101, Amnesty International, the University of Washington’s Center for Human Rights and other allies are sponsoring a special commemoration of the 24th Anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre, “In Search of Guidance from History to Build a Democratic China,” featuring Feng Congde, a 1989 Student Leader as the keynote speaker.
Sponsor: Chinese Democracy & Human Rights Alliance. Including: Federation for a Democratic China, Amnesty International, China Democracy Party, Alliance for Democracy, China Social Democratic Party, and the Release Dr. Wang BingZhang Committee. Co-sponsor: Center for Human Rights, University of Washington.
Join us to hear Zeke Johnson, Director of Amnesty International’s Security with Human Rights Campaign at Bellevue College, Room D106 on Thursday May 16, 1:30 – 2:30 pm, and at the University of Washington, HUB 238 on Friday, May 17, 1:30 – 2:30 pm. See below for further details. Also, take action online at: http://www.amnestyusa.org/drones
The use of drones to kill has increased. Guantanamo is still open. President Obama and Congress have embraced indefinite detention, military commissions and impunity for torture. More than a decade after the September 11 attacks, the U.S. government continues to violate human rights in the name of its never-ending and vaguely defined “global war” against al Qaeda and other armed groups and individuals. The negative consequences for human rights are immense. The message sent is that a government can ignore its human rights obligations whenever it deems the circumstances warrant.
Despite this bleak picture, now is not the time to give up–it’s time to campaign even harder for human rights than ever before. Director of Amnesty International’s Security with Human Rights Campaign, Zeke Johnson, is coming to Washington to share the latest news, tell the personal stories of those affected and discuss what each of us can do to stand against torture, Guantanamo and extrajudicial executions.

What’s going on with human rights in Seattle? Join us for an informal open house to learn more about our 2013 campaigns, plans for building our activist base, and how to contribute locally. Samantha Rodgers, Chief Membership Mobilization Officer for Amnesty International USA, will be joining us to learn about our AI membership in Seattle and share upcoming plans for the organization. We’ll also hear from activist leaders about their current initiatives and actions, and want to hear your ideas for our work as well!
About Samantha:
Samantha comes to Amnesty from Greenpeace USA where she was a member of the senior leadership team as Grassroots Director, overseeing Greenpeace’s volunteer and mobilization strategies to solve global warming, protect ancient forests, save oceans and reduce environmental toxins. In 2006 she started Greenpeace’s field organizing team and launched Project Hot Seat, a campaign to implement legislative solutions to global warming in the U.S. that moved over 70 members and candidates for Congress to improve their positions on the issue. Prior to Greenpeace, she worked with MoveOn.org Political Action, where she was part of MoveOn’s first full-scale field organizing campaign and directed operations in Albuquerque, NM during the 2004 election season.
