Amnesty International Group 4 will have no November meeting. Plans are underway for our traditional write-a-thon event in December and we’re still looking for a new meeting place.

Join us for our monthly meeting on Tuesday, October 7, now at the Chaco Canyon Cafe in the U District (4757 12th Avenue NE) from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. Table reserved on the south side of café. First half hour is letter writing and socializing. Meeting starts at 7 pm.
Our former meeting place, the Mosaic Coffee House, will no longer be open evenings now that they’re reopening, so we’ll add a discussion on a new meeting place to the other items on the agenda.
Cases we’ll be discussing and writing letters on include (at the request of a visitor from Mexico) students killed and disappeared in Guerrero, Mexico (a case that looks even grimmer, as mass graves have been discovered recently) and a case adaption by Group 4 of Syrian citizen journalist Ali Mahmoud Othman, disappeared by the Syrian government in March 2012, and not seen from since he appeared on Syrian state TV in May 2012 explaining Ali had been arrested for being a media worker who co-operated with”external powers plotting against Syria.”
Also upcoming events including an “I am Troy Davis” book discussion in November and an upcoming lobby delegation focused on End Racial Profiling Act, and International Violence Against Women Act.

Join the activists of Amnesty International Group 4 Seattle as we enjoy the last of the summer weather, and brainstorm about new ways to promote Human Rights both locally and worldwide. On Sunday, September 28th (weather permitting), we’ll gather at Miller Playfield on Capitol Hill at 2:00 pm for a picnic:

Look for us on the North end of the field, near the parking lot. We’ll have some food and beverages to start, but it will be a potluck, so bring something to eat or drink if convenient.
The goal is to better connect with like-minded individuals and groups, find out what everyone is working on, and perhaps see if there is common ground where we can pool our resources, or barring that, just get some new perspectives on more effective ways to help ensure that all people everywhere are allowed the safety and freedom to pursue their lives as they choose.

On Saturday, August 9, police in Ferguson, MO fatally shot Mike Brown, an unarmed 18 year-old who was walking to his grandmother’s house. The epidemic of police and vigilante violence against people of color, particularly black people, leaves a wake of pain and grief that we must deal with as a community.
This Thursday, August 14, 2014 at 7pm EST (4 pm PST), all across our country, communities will host National Moment of Silence (NMOS) vigils to pay respect to victims of police brutality, with a national moment of silence occurring at 20 minutes past the hour.
Amnesty International activists across the country are attending and organizing vigils to stand in solidarity with victims of police brutality.
There are two events currently being planned in the Seattle area.
• Mothers for Police Accountability is hosting a vigil at 4th & Pine in Downtown Seattle. They will engage in one hour of silent reflection starting at 4:20pm. (Main point of contact for this is Reverend Harriett G Walden.)
• Queen Anne Baptist Church (2011 1st Ave N, Seattle, WA 98109) will host a gathering. (Pastor Jasen Frelot is the main point of contact for this event.)
These are vigils, not protests or rallies. There will be no speeches. We will have silence starting at 4:20pm.
What to bring: A red sash to wear on your right arm or wrist to identify yourself to your fellow participants, candles, signs expressing solidarity, photos of the slain.
What not to bring: Bullhorns, protest gear, signs that express hatred toward the police, etc.
Please use good judgement. This is a vigil, a community gathering to express our feelings. It is not an opportunity to start shit with the cops or incite a riot.
What to do now:
• Get the word out online and off.
• Let us know if you have special skills to lend.
AI Group 4 is having no meeting for August, join us in September! In addition to vacation and National Night Out conflicts for our regular first Tuesday meeting, the Mosaic Coffee House is closed for the month of August.

This Sunday, June 1 we will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre, which took place on June 4, 1989. As always, the memorial event is co-sponsored by Amnesty International and the Federation for a Democratic China along with a number of Chinese democracy and human rights organizations.
