1. Three members of the Ogaden Youth & Student Union will be giving a presentation regarding recent events. OYSU is an international youth organization that advocates for the rights of the Somali people in the Ogaden region under Ethiopian occupation.
2. Update about big changes going on with Death Penalty issues in Washington State.
3. Update on the latest status of Amnesty International staff arrested in Turkey.
4. Discussion about a new Prisoner of Conscience Group 4 is adopting.
5. Discussion regarding President Trump’s recent statements on Guantanamo.

CLOSE GUANTANAMO RALLY

Most Americans have forgotten that Guantanamo prison camp even still exists. But Amnesty International hasn’t.
People are still held there without charge or trial. Just like in the dictatorships we love to criticize overseas. It’s well past time to close it down.

On Thursday Jan 11th at 7:00PM there will be a guest speaker at the UW School of Law, Jonathan Hafetz. Jonathan Hafetz is a senior staff attorney with the ACLU Center for Democracy. He is also a professor of law at Seton Hall University School of Law, where he teaches courses on constitutional law, national security law, and international law.

This month’s meeting will be devoted mostly to Write-a-thon planning, death penalty updates, and I-940 police accountability initiative news.

Mark your Calendars for the January 2nd 2018 Planning Meeting, same time, same location. It’s an election year and there’ll be lots to discuss!

Every year Amnesty International celebrates the Dec 10th signing of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights by organizing a worldwide letter writing campaign, highlighting a selection of cases taken from the work we do all year long.

Tens of thousands of letters letting governments know that the world is watching and is not content to sit by and do nothing. Seattleites can be a part of this by coming to the Montlake Public Library on Sunday December 10th from 2:00 – 4:00.

Snacks will be provided.

This month’s meeting will include a wrap-up of last month’s Statewide Meeting, discussion on how we can promote I-940 (the police accountability initiative), planning for the December 10th Write-a-thon, death penalty, and more.

It’s the perfect way to spend the evening while we’re awaiting election results. Please join us.

Thursday, November 2nd @ 5:30-8:30 will be the opening night for El Centro de la Raza’s Dia de los Muertos exhibit, featuring altarpieces by Amnesty International Group 4, De-Escalate Washington, WARN, and many, many more.

Amnesty’s alter is dedicated to the memory of murdered environmental activists in Latin America. It’s titled “We Are Defending the Land with our Blood.” The exhibit will be open for three weeks. Please do swing by and see it.
